Delivery driver leaves ‘passive aggressive note’ after customer gives €9 tip

Apparently the tip was more of an insult than a gift

Tipping culture is not particularly common practice in Ireland, however, in the USA it is often expected.

Therefore, when one anonymous Reddit user tipped their driver $10 (€9) only to receive $1.98 (€1.83) back in change with an angry note, the customer expressed their surprise and confusion online.

The user under the name of phantaxtic posted an image of the note along with a plastic bag containing change of just under a couple dollars.

On Reddit, the poster wrote: “Food delivery driver left a note on our car in a bag with $1.95 and a passive aggressive message. We tipped him $10, the restaurant is a 10 minute drive away.”

The note the driver left read: “Here’s some spare change you clearly need it more than I do. Keep it for your next delivery driver’s tip. Stay safe.”

The photo has since gone viral spurring plenty of debate on the internet.

One user wrote: “After a few bad experiences with the various delivery services, I’ll starve in my house rather than deal with it.”

Meanwhile someone else said: “Really expensive, slow, and at the end, your food arrives ice cold, what a service!”

A third added: “‘Stay safe’ – don’t know if it’s a warning or advice!”

One user even toted up the value for money of the tip.

They wrote: “That’s a great tip for 10 minutes, you take three deliveries in an hour around 20 minutes a delivery and $10 tip per delivery that’s $30 an hour.”

Finally one person replied: “Unpopular opinion: You shouldn't tip anyone at all the establishment and the government is responsible for making sure that employees receive fair pay.”

Tipping culture is massive in the States and makes up a large proportion of hospitality workers' wages.

Due to many workplaces underpaying staff, people are generally expected to tip at a rate of 20%.

However, for whatever reason it appears that this particular delivery driver did not think they needed the helping hand.
