More than 2,000 people were surveyed to get the results.
STIs and STDs are something that can easily be forgotten about when you’re having regular sex.
It seems many people today are soley concerned about their method of contraception being foolproof rather than the protection against sexually transmitted conditions.
This is especially shown in a new survey carried out by VoucherCodesPro.co.uk where respondents were asked what their relationship status was and the results are pretty shocking.
34% of people were in a relationship, 52% confessed to being single while the other 14% said they were in a casual situation.
For those of whom who caught an STI and were in a relationship, 41% of respondents to the survey said the STI could only be from their partner’s sexual infidelity and passing it on to them.
Rather worryingly, 39% of people in a relationship confessed to not telling their other half immediately while only 20% said they confronted their partner about the STI they got.
Researchers of the survey asked respondents did they tell any previous partners of their STI, to which only 31% of people admitted to doing.
The reasons that the other 69% of people gave for not telling their partners they had an STI includes being too embarrassed, not knowing how to contact them, too much effort having to call so many people, assuming partners already knew about the STI and not wanting the partner to know they had slept with someone else.
A spokesperson for the survey commented on the slightly alarming results.
“It’s quite apparent that we are still not taking STIs seriously which is a very worrying thought.”
“It is absolutely not acceptable to sleep with someone without protection if you know you have an STI….
“Embarrassment is no excuse. Of course it is difficult when you have an incurable STI like HPV or herpes but speaking to someone openly about this before you jump into bed with them is incredibly important and will prevent the infection spreading unnecessarily.”
