Nurses Create Disposable Bras to Protect Women’s Modesty in Hospital

Looks like those cringy white paper underwear you get in hospital might be on the way out. 

Natalie Reid and Fiona Cartwright nurses working in South Wales spotted a gap in the market when they discovered that many women feel uncomfortable going into surgery because they felt too exposed.

And so, the Digni Bra was born.

Traditionally, women were only given paper knickers to wear under a gown but nothing to cover their breasts.

The blue paper bra protects women’s modesty when in hospital but also allows room for essential heart monitoring.

“It's not about vanity, it is about dignity” said nurse Natalie, “Obviously all the medics are professionals who've seen it all. But we would still want to be covered up if we going in for surgery.”

To date, these innovative undergarments have been tried and tested at a private hospital in Cardiff where they’ve received a warm welcome.

"When we did the survey we found that 95 percent of the women we asked did not know that they may become exposed when being prepared for surgery" said Fiona.

"We have met with some of the health boards and they seemed very positive about the idea, but it's difficult at a time when the NHS is cutting back."
