So you’ve decided to take on an adventure race?

Fair play! It’ll not be easy but you can guarantee it’ll be a great experience.

Training ahead of the race will not only make the whole experience more enjoyable but you will also be less likely to injure yourself on the big day. We asked celebrity trainer Sophie Kavanagh to give us her top tips for smashing your first adventure race.

Here are a few things you should keep in mind in the weeks/ months leading up to the race.

1.  Interval training is key

Interval training is so important when training for an adventure race. Not only does it help improve your lung capacity and overall fitness, it also helps improve your mental toughness, something you will definitely need to take on your race.

2. Mix it up

Don’t focus on running alone. While running is a great way to train you should also try to incorporate  rowing or biking to mix it up so you’re not on your feet too much.

3. Get your head in the game

You can easily train your body for an adventure race but you also need to train your mind. You need to be prepared to really tackle the race ahead. Get used to pushing past your tiredness and pain to complete your sets, you’ll need that kind of grit on race day.

4. Run right

It’s important to run the right way to avoid injury. When running keep hips square, your head up and weight on the front of your foot.

5. Use proper form in the gym

When using the rowing machine make sure you keep your back neutral and your eye line and chin up. When you’re using the bike always make sure the saddle is at the right height
