Her Health Revolution: All You Need to Know About Antioxidants

The Her Health Revolution is well underway! Today we're talking antioxidants - what they are, why you need them, and where you can get them...

Rebecca McKnight

It’s a term you might hear used in relation to health from time to time, but do you know what antioxidants actually are, and what you need them for?

Antioxidant quite literally means against oxidation. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that produces free radicals. Free radicals are molecules produced when your body breaks down food, and these molecules can damage cells, and may play a role many health conditions also.

So, antioxidants are chemical substances that help protect against cell damage from free radicals. Well known antioxidants include vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, carotenoids, and flavonoids – found in fruits and vegetables, nuts, grains, and some meats, poultry and fish.

Pomegranates are known to be a good source of polyphenol antioxidants.

These antioxidants can help strengthen the immune system as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. It is also believed that antioxidant rich foods play an important role in keeping arteries healthy and lowering cholesterol, all essential in maintaining healthy heart function.
