The CSO found that Ireland is the eighth most expensive for food, while alcohol and tobacco ranked in at fourth and third most expensive on the list. But for non-alcoholic beverages such as coffee, Ireland ranked in as the second most expensive country in Europe after Norway. Prices across the board on average, as measured by the Consumer Price Index, were 0.7% higher in August 2019 compared with August 2018. The most notable changes in the year were increases in Alcoholic Beverages & Tobacco (+3.1%), Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas & Other Fuels (+2.9%), Restaurants & Hotels (+2.0%) and Education (+1.7%).
