The hotel itself dates from 1897, when it was built on a design by architect, Arthur Hill. Edward VII enjoyed tea on the roof of The Metropole when he visited Cork in 1903 for the city’s Great Exhibition and the hotel has also hosted famous guests including Gregory Peck, Frank O’Connor, John Steinbeck, Vittoria de Sica, John Huston and Walt Disney. Dawn Adams, the 1950’s British film star created the greatest stir when she stayed at The Metropole during the Cork Film Festival and requested her bath be filled with milk. Douglas Vance, the famous hotelier, refused her, reasoning that the people of Cork were finding it hard to makes ends meet. The story made headlines around the world at that time.
