The ‘world’s best wine’ is being sold in Asda for less than a fiver

We're not going to lie, we don't know too much about wine.

It's red or it's white, it tastes good and too much of it makes you text daft things to girls and dance like a knob at parties. That's why we went and asked leading wine expert Frances Bentley for her tips on buying good plonk in the supermarket. While we might not know our pinot noirs from our pinot grigios, what we do know is good value when we see it. And if you like getting change from a fiver when you're out buying wine, then this one's for you. One of Asda's budget reds has been named 'the best wine in the world for under £15 (€19).' But you won't have to pay £15 for it. You won't even have to pay a third of that, oh no. It's in store for a cheap and cheerful £4.37 (€5.55). That's pretty incredible for a wine that beat off competition from 16,000 other bottles of vino to be crowned the cream of the crop by actual wine connoisseurs. Its name is La Moneda Reserva Malbec from Chile if you're going to rush out and buy a few crates. A slosh of 240 wine experts (we didn't know the collective noun for wine experts, so we made one up) said the Chilean red was 'an absolute crowd pleaser'. And the taste? "Freshly crushed black fruit, creamy vanilla yoghurt and pepper spice” according to the judges, who exalted its “succulent juicy berries on the palate” and "excellent freshness". It was awarded the Platinum Best in Show at the industry’s Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) after a week of 16,000 blind taste tests to name the winners. Bet there were a few sore heads after that.
