Neurologist Dr Richard Restak has revealed the exact age at which people should give up alcohol to avoid Alzheimer's further down the line.
According to Restak's advice, 65 is the age to say goodbye to beer, wine and spirits forever.
In his book, The Complete Guide to Memory: The Science of Strengthening Your Mind, Restak writes: "Alcohol is a very, very weak neurotoxin – it’s not good for nerve cells.
"It is essential to abstain from alcohol at a stage in life where preserving neurons is crucial.
"I strongly suggest that if you are 65 years old or older, that you completely and permanently eliminate alcohol from your diet."
His reasoning for choosing 65 is because the risk of Alzheimer's and dementia increases massively past that age and becomes greater every five years.
Several studies have shown that excessive alcohol consumption can lead to diseases of the brain as alcohol shrinks certain parts of it.
Shrinkage can then quicken the process of dementia or trigger the disease itself.
Half of the cases of dementia worldwide can be prevented or significantly delayed by cutting down on alcohol consumption or quitting it all together according to Alzheimer's Research UK.
