It makes sense that as a part of your working body, your belly button deserves the same soapy attention as the rest of your limbs.

But despite your best efforts at keeping your torso dip clean, chances are it could be a breeding ground for bacteria.

According to research from North Carolina State University, the average navel is swarming with 67 different species of bacteria.

As well as developing an unsightly smell or infection, failing to clean out your bellybutton correctly can lead to red, itchy, scabby skin.

So how can you avoid bellybutton bother?

According to dermatologists, showering isn’t enough.

While it might remove some germs, lint and sweat, people with an ‘innie’ bellybutton should be swabbing with a cotton bud that has been dipped in warm soapy water or alcohol once a week and drying the area thoroughly.
