YES! Luther season five will air over Christmas and we’re so ready

Season five is almost here.

It has been almost three years since Detective Chief Inspector John Luther last graced our screens. The Idris Elba-starring cop show has been one of the best British dramas of recent years, with Elba’s no holds barred performance helping to create a character that could easily hold his own against any US crime show star you care to mention. Of course, these days Idris Elba is an honest-to-god proper movie star, which means getting him to film six episodes of a BBC One show isn’t very easy – hence the delay. Production for season five began in June, but we’ve not known when it will hit our screens. Today though, BBC One previewed its Christmas schedule, and confirmed that Luther season five is part of its festive line-up. https://twitter.com/bbcpress/status/1067348770621456385 They still haven’t confirmed the date the show will actually air, but it will definitely make up for the multiple episodes of Mrs Brown’s Boys in the schedule. The official synopsis for the new series reads:

When the moonless shadows of London give birth to a new nightmare, DCI John Luther played by Idris Elba is once more called to immerse himself in the deepest depths of human depravity. While the monstrous and seemingly indiscriminate killings become ever more audacious and public, Luther and new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday played by Wunmi Mosaku are confounded by a complex tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an untouchable corruption. But even as the case brings him closer than ever to the true face of evil, a reluctant Luther is forced to confront the unburied demons of his own recent past. Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect and who to sacrifice. Whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him - and change John Luther forever.
