Many of us will agree that seeing a show at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre always feels extra special, but the atmosphere at Wicked's press night was something special.
The Her team was lucky to head along to see the show and our expectations were pretty high.
Wicked is one of those musicals that is constantly being praised, always being celebrated, and forever touring. It's a crowd favourite, but one I never got to see until this week.
The musical is based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, Stephen Schwartz, and Winnie Holzman and imagines a beguiling backstory and future possibilities to the lives of L. Frank Baum’s characters from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
In the show, we see the origin stories of both Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West with plenty of twists, tricks, and surprises throughout.
The story follows their unlikely friendship when they meet at university, but quickly takes an unexpected turn.
I knew very little about Wicked before the show started, other than the fact that it features Defying Gravity and witches, and was pleasantly moved by the storyline.
I didn't expect to find a show so full of fantasy so emotional and touching.
The personal highlight for me was the complicated and intense friendship between Glinda and Elphaba. There were moments when I felt they were better off as enemies, and others when I was hoping they'd reunite and work on their friendship.
Their relationship was complex and messy but also incredibly poignant too.
Actresses Laura Pick (Elphaba) and Ireland's own Sarah O'Connor (Glinda) completely won the audience over from the moment the curtains lifted.
Both stars completely blew the crowd away and left the theatre in awe of their immense talent.
Wicked is an enchanting, moving, and surprisingly witty show and it's one you cannot afford to miss. It grants you a well-needed burst of escapism for a couple of hours as you go on a journey to Oz with the most unlikely friends.
Wicked will run at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre from July 23rd to September 14th, 2024.
