Heading to see Suicide Squad? Here’s why you shouldn’t listen to those reviews

Thinking of going to see Suicide Squad this weekend but put off by all the bad reviews? Don't listen to them.

Let's get one thing straight - I'm not here to say that Suicide Squad is the best movie I've ever seen, but rather to defend it because it's getting far too much stick in my opinion. I really enjoyed it and I'm just so surprised that everyone is absolutely slating it. What's not to like? It's got a stellar cast, great action, comedy and just wait for the soundtrack. First of all, Margot Robbie steals the show as Harley Quinn. I'm not a comic book fan so I'm not too bothered about how close an actor comes to a character, but I think she was ideal for the role. Young, fresh and completely out of her acting comfort zone. She absolutely nailed it. Will Smith, need I say more? The man can do no wrong in my eyes. His character Deadshot reminded me of his other superhero character Hancock. He's the perfect stern grump and Deadshot is just that. His on-screen chemistry with Margot Robbie is as good as it was in Focus, minus the love interest of course. Cara Delevingne is another person who works really well in the movie. Admittedly, some of her character's alter ego lines are poor at times but I did not expect her to have such a focus in the movie as she did. Warner Brothers barely show her in the trailer and yet she is the main evil force in the movie. This was quite refreshing that they left something out of the trailer for once. I wasn't 100% convinced by Jared Leto as the Joker, if I'm honest. I'm sure others will disagree and I can't quite pinpoint why his portrayal of the character wasn't right, but it just didn't fit for me. He seemed too modern in a way. Maybe that was the point but it didn't suit the other characters.

When it comes to the storyline, I can't fault it. The beginning might seem slow at first but it makes sense as they go through each of the squad characters one by one so you fully understand their backgrounds and gives you a better insight into them. In fairness, they're no Batman or Superman, if you haven't read a comic book then you probably don't have a clue who they are, so it was important to give us a back story. Once you're up to date with all the key characters, the main story begins to play out really well. I presume you all know the rough story? A group of convicts, Deadshot, Harley Quinn and co, are brought together by the government as a secret task force to take down an enigmatic, insuperable entity. They're used to being the bad guys in most scenarios, but somehow now they must help out the good guys and save the city.

It has a well-paced storyline with just the right amount of action. Never once did I get bored or wonder how long was left. It goes between the main characters' pasts and flicks back to the present effortlessly. The whole story has a good flow with some surprises along the way. What I liked most about the movie was the subtle injection of humour. Margot Robbie is instrumental for most of this due to the nature of her quirky character. The one liners are so well placed and timed that you genuinely will laugh out loud. Don't even get me started on the soundtrack. With old tracks like 'Without You' from Eminem and new songs like Grace's 'You Don't Know Me' and 'Heathens' by Twenty One Pilots, it knits the movie together and builds on some of the most important scenes. I think most of the bad reviews have stemmed from comic book fans who aren't happy with how it all played out. Fair enough, but at the end of the day it's a movie that is very enjoyable. I'm quick to say when I don't like a movie, but I genuinely can't majorly fault this one. Like I said, it's not the best movie I've ever seen and not close to my top five, but I don't think it deserves to be slated. Trust me, go to the cinema and make up your own mind about the movie and stop listening to all the grumpy critics.
