Filming is underway for the new Downton Abbey series

It's official! A new season of Downton Abbey is in the works

The beloved period drama has always been one of our favourite shows, so hearing it will be returning is like music to our ears.

We also may not have too long to wait for brand-new episodes of the show.

According to reports, the cast has already started filming the new series, but they’re trying to keep things under wraps for now.

An insider told MailOnline: “Filming has been going on for a few weeks now, it is all very, very secret.”

The team behind the award-winning series felt it was wrong not to return because the show was so important.

There is more of the story to be told and the beloved characters we all grew to love will be back on screen before we know it.

“There are people working on it who have never seen secrecy like it. It was such a huge success before and there are so many more stories to be told.

"It seemed such a shame not to be able to make more of it but they’ve made it happen,” the insider added.

Downton Abbey’s final episode aired in 2015, but two feature films followed after the show’s success.

The show ran for six series and featured some of the biggest stars including Maggie Smith, Dan Stevens, Lily James, and Richard E. Grant.

The last Downton Abbey movie was released in 2022.
