Variety has confirmed that a biopic about the late singer is in the works and it will focus around her early life, as well as her activism.
The original producers of the documentary Nothing Compares are involved in this project.
The Irish production company IE: entertainment has reportedly joined forces with See-Saw Films.
Irish banner Nine Daughters is also involved in the project, according to Variety. BBC Film is funding the project.
Josephine Decker will reportedly direct the movie, and Irish writer Stacey Gregg has written the script.
The publication confirms that the biopic has been in the works since the Nothing Compares documentary.
Variety says the project will focus on her early life, as well as her early days in the music industry.
"It will look to tell the story of how one young woman from Dublin took on the world, examining how her global fame may have been built on her talent, but her name became synonymous with her efforts to draw attention to the crimes committed by the Catholic Church and the Irish state," Variety confirms.
There has been no update on who will play Sinead O'Connor, who took the name Shuhada Sadaqat later in life, in the biopic.
The team has also not yet confirmed when they plan on releasing the movie.
