One of 2023’s most shocking splits.
The news of Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas’ divorce was one that nobody had seen coming.
When the former celebrity couple confirmed their split in a joint statement online, fans were quick to choose a side, despite it being a ‘mutual’ decision to call it quits.
The adoration for a once beloved power couple, swiftly turned into a finger-wagging contest on parenting choices and the teardown of Turner as a mother.
During the length of their relationship and marriage, Jonas and Turner welcomed two daughters together, which would inevitably change their parenting dynamic in the aftermath of their break-up.
This is how a DM in 2016 resulted in two people trying to navigate a divorce and custody battle with the world watching.
October 2016: They meet
While the ‘Game of Thrones’ actress never considered herself to be a diehard Jonas Brothers fan, but things would change after Jonas reached out online.
“My friends and I were not Jonas Brothers fans … We hated them,” she told Elle for its April 2020 issue.
After ‘The Leave Before You Love Me’ singer slid into Turner’s DMs, they agreed to meet at a bar, where he changed her mind about who she thought he would be.
“I expected him to show up with security and everything. I thought, ‘He’s gonna be such a d–k’,” she told the magazine.
“It was just this local shitty bar, dirty, with great music and people throwing up everywhere. It was that kind of place. Kind of like the worst, but also kind of the best.
“I remember the two of us spending only a couple of minutes on the dance floor, and then we just found a space far in the corner and we just talked. We talked for hours, and hours, and hours.
“And I was, like, not bored. It wasn’t contrived. It wasn’t small talk – it was just so easy. And soon we were, like, inseparable. I went on tour with him.”
January 2017: Relationship is confirmed
Just months into their new relationship, Turner confirmed their romantic status with a simple upload to Instagram on New Year’s Day in 2017.
The photo showed Jonas on board a boat with a yacht on a sunny day.
October 2017: Engaged
On their first anniversary, Jonas popped the question, with the former couple making an online announcement on October 15th, 2017.
Turner uploaded a picture of their hands showing her engagement ring and captioned it “I said yes.”
October 2018: Red carpet debut
While Jonas and Turner had confirmed their relationship online and were now engaged, it wasn’t until 2018, that the pair made their red carpet debut together.
They attended the Louis Vuitton show at Paris Fashion Week in October of that year, solidifying their status as a celebrity couple AKA the hard launch of the celebrity world.
In the same month, the pair took another big step by getting matching ink of a Toy Story quote.
In an Instagram by @mr.k_tattoo, the former flames had “To infinity & beyond” across their wrists.
May, 2019: Las Vegas Wedding
Jonas and Turner tied the knot (for the first time) in a Las Vegas ceremony on May 1st, 2019 surrounded by their family and friends.
Not only was an Elvis impersonator the officiant, Diplo live-streamed the moment.

June, 2019: Wedding no.2
The couple then decided to have a more traditional wedding a month later.
The pair tied the knot again at a chateau in Sarrians, in Southern France.
July 2020: They welcome their first child together
Jonas and Turner welcomed their first child together in July 2020, a baby girl named Willa.
The actress didn’t confirm her pregnancy until after she gave birth.
July 2022: Baby no.2 arrives
The former couple welcomed their second daughter, Delphine, two years after Willa.
Again, they chose not to officially confirm that they were expecting until after her arrival in July 2022.
September 2023: Joe files for divorce and a custody battle ensues
On September 25th, 2023, Jonas filed for a divorce against Turner after four years of marriage.
According to E! News, the ‘Burning Up’ singer stated that the “marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken”.
On September 6th, Turner and Jonas released a joint statement on Instagram to confirm the news, shocking fans of the couple, who up until this point, believed the relationship to be perfect.
While the pair claimed it was ‘mutually decided’ to ‘amicably’ end their marriage, on September 21st the actress filed a suit against her estranged husband for the “wrongful retention of two children … from their habitual residence of England,” according to the court document obtained by Billboard.
On September 25th, the former couple came to a temporary agreement after filing an interim consent order to keep their two daughters in New York rather than having them return to England.
October 2023: Temporary agreement in custody battle
A month later, the former couple were still working out how to agree on a permanent co-parenting system – unfortunately, in front of the world.
Page Six obtained court documents which revealed that Jonas filed to dismiss his petition in Miami so the couple could address their divorce in private.
The former couple reached “various agreements” after a four-day mediation and planned to “pursue an amicable resolution of all issues.”
A court filing from October 10th revealed that they had reached a temporary agreement in their custody battle, according to court documents obtained by multiple outlets, including People.
They later issued a joint statement to Page Six detailing their co-parenting arrangement:
“After a productive and successful mediation, we have agreed that the children will spend time equally in loving homes in both the US and the UK. We look forward to being great co-parents.”
November 2023: Sophie moves on
By November, Turner was romantically linked with someone new.
In a photo published by The UK Sun, the ‘Game of Thrones’ alum was seen sharing a kiss with British aristocrat, Peregrine Pearson, in Paris.

The temporary agreement outlined the dates when each of the parents would have their daughters over the holidays, with Turner taking custody from with November 2nd to 22nd.
Jonas had custody of their children from November 22nd to December 16th, with Turner taking them again over Christmas until January 6th.
January 2024: Custody resolution and Jonas moves on
On January 17th, 2024, reports suggest that Turner is reportedly dropping the ‘child abduction charges’ against her estranged husband.
In new legal documents obtained by TMZ, the former couple’s attorneys have requested that the judge in their federal case dismiss the entire action.
The judge has yet to officially grant the dismissal.
This comes after Jonas was seen boarding a private jet at the Los Cabos Airport with model Stormi Bree earlier this month.
The later appeared on DeuxMoi in a photograph with friends pals at Casa Tua, an Italian restaurant in Aspen, Colorado.
