Selena Gomez says she will delete Instagram amid backlash from social media users on her recent Instagram story about the Israel-Hamas war.

This comes after the 31-year-old recently broke her silence on the ongoing conflict, sharing that she had taken a break from social media and adding that she ‘wished’ she could ‘change the world’.

“My heart breaks to see all the horror, hate, violence, and terror that’s going on in the world,” she wrote.

“People being tortured and killed or any act of hate towards any one group is horrific. We need to protect ALL people, especially children and stop the violence for good.”

“I’m sorry if my words will never be enough for everyone or a hashtag. I just can’t stand by innocent people getting hurt. That’s what makes me sick. I wish I could change the world. But a post won’t.”

This statement prompted a strong reaction from social media users who felt she could make a difference by taking a stance due to her large following of 430 million users online.

Gomez has been a UNICEF ambassador since 2009, something users also pointed out after she published her Instagram story.

In the wake of public backlash, the singer has announced, in a now deleted story, that she will be removing the app from her phone.

“I’m taking a break and deleting my Instagram. I’m done. I do not support any of what’s going on,” Gomez wrote.

At the time of publishing this article, her account remained active following her deleted story announcement.
