RTÉ presenter Geri Maye shares pain of suffering 12 miscarriages

"I never forget the first time saying to my husband 'I can never go through this again.'"

RTÉ presenter Geri Maye has told of her pain of suffering 12 miscarriages. The broadcaster, who is best known for her time on The Den and Winning Streak, said that the first time she lost a pregnancy, she didn't know who to turn to. She said that if she had known she would go through the same thing 11 more times, she would have "crawled back into bed and never gotten out again." "I never forget the first time saying to my husband 'I can never go through this again,'" told Virgin Media One's Elaine.  "I didn’t know where to turn (...) this is a situation where you can lose friends. You get into a situation where you don’t want to burden people. I got into a stage where I didn’t want to burden anyone any more." Maye said that she miscarried twice on live TV, and that she began prioritising her work over her health. "It was the decision to go to Holles Street or do the programme and the programme won out," she said. "I started to become a different person. Because now I was saying I had to get on with this, I have to keep going. "I had to say to my co-presenter, 'you need to keep an eye on me today. We need to go for this.'" Irene Lowry, founder of Nurture Health, was also on today's panel to inform women and families with experience of miscarriage that support is available. Maye said that at the time, she felt like she was the only person who had any understanding of what was happening to her. “I have to be honest, it was down to me and my husband. It was the two of us against the world," she said. Elaine airs Monday to Friday at 3pm on Virgin Media One.
