Muireann O'Connell says she meant no harm
Presenter Muireann O'Connell has been forced to apologise after her Olympics joke was not received well.
The presenter was joking about the water polo on her Instagram story, but her comments, which were pretty harmless in our eyes, ruffled some feathers.
Muireann shared, "Water polo! Who does this. One would assume rich, stoner children with pools in the back garden, who knows. I love the Olympics!"
The host clearly meant no harm but she was later forced to apologise after upsetting the water polo community.
"Omg it was a crap joke about water polo. How have I offended the water polo community? Sorry lads.
"I was really enjoying it. The commentary and supporters were craic. I got swept up in it. Genuinely, no offense meant. All people can play water polo. Not just posh people."
The journalist later said the Olympics are incredible for highlighting the unifying force of sport.
She also said it introduces us to sports we never would've known about before and allows us to appreciate them more.
Writing on her Instagram, Muireann praised the athletes and said she was jumping out of her seat when watching the water polo.
"I know SFA about water polo but I watched it for half an hour, was jumping out of my seat and shouting for both teams.
"The power of the Olympics! It may be corrupt AF [as f***] on some fronts but it is honestly amazing at exposing us to things we normally wouldn’t care about and genuinely bringing people together."
She stressed, "That was the point of my crap joke."
