“It doesn’t get easier, it actually gets harder in some ways”
Parenting three children is no easy feat, and Lucy Kennedy admits it’s something that sometimes keeps her up at night.
The TV host and author is mum to Jack (15), Holly (12), and Jess (8), and she says she finds that as they grow, the challenges evolve.
“It doesn’t get easier, it actually gets harder in some ways,” Lucy shared in an interview with RSVP Magazine.
While younger children can be scooped up and protected, she says parenting older kids means letting them navigate life on their own – even when you want to hold on tighter.
Lucy admits she’s grown as a parent over the years. “Jack has been the guinea pig as the eldest – I made the most mistakes with him.
“I’m getting better with Holly, and I’ll be perfect by the time Jess grows up,” she laughed.
Parenting boys and girls comes with unique challenges, Lucy said.
“Boys cause physical chaos, and girls bring mental chaos,” she explained. While Jack is straightforward – happy with food and a football – Holly and Jess require more emotional support, which she finds equally demanding.
One thing Lucy cherishes is watching the bond between her children.
“They’re either fighting or laughing together,” she said. “There’s nothing nicer than seeing them laugh – it gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling as a parent.”
Lucy also sees bits of herself and her husband Richie in their kids. “Jack is like Richie, Holly has my cheekiness, and Jess has my love for people,” she said.
Jess, the youngest, is especially easygoing – a quality Lucy attributes to the relaxed parenting approach that often comes with experience.
Reflecting on her own childhood, Lucy revealed she was the middle child and “the naughty one from day one.”
Her parenting journey has taught her to embrace both the chaos and the joy of raising three uniquely different kids.
