James Patrice has gotten candid about receiving hateful messages online for his portrayal of 'Malahide Woman'.
While many love and find the Irish mammy parody hilarious and relatable, the Irish social media personality says he has been on the receiving end of trolling.
In an interview with RSVP Live, James confessed that he has received negative messages from some users towards the persona, despite censoring his comedic content to protect his younger audience.
"I have gotten some messages. People say ‘This is disgusting’ or ‘Our kids shouldn’t be exposed to this,'" he told the outlet.
"If you are letting your child watch me on Facebook or Instagram, that is your issue. I am always very mindful that young people follow me so I don’t use major profanities or do anything too ‘out there'. I censor things."
James says that 'Malahide Woman' is all about 'encapsulating the humour of an Irish 'hun' mother'.
"She always has the craic; she may be collecting the kids from school, going to her office party or recovering from having a few too many wines the night before.
"She is very accessible and fun and I think that is why people associate with her so much.
"Pantos are over 150 years old in Ireland, and that is the oldest form of drag. Look at Mrs. Brown and Lily Savage on prime time TV."
His 'Malahide Woman' content is always intended to be light-hearted and humorous, with James saying people should lean into the 'escapism' that she was created for.
"There is a lot of anger around at the moment and people are frustrated and annoyed. For me, the beauty of online is that it is a great avenue to share information and your views.
"Also, I utilise social media for a bit of fun and for an escape. I think people who follow me do so for that bit of escapism.
"As much as there is that vitriol online, it can still be a positive place and a place to forget your problems and woes."
Looking to the future, the social media star would love to tap into the potential that the Irish mammy has by taking her to the small screen.
"It has been discussed in the past and perhaps there could be a Mother’s Day special in the future.
"I will usually hop up and do a few numbers around Pride. It is always so much fun. I have ideas of how we can flesh that out into a longer show and how we can get people in to have a bit of craic."
We can also look forward to seeing more of James in the New Year as he prepares to take on the role of reporting backstage on Dancing with the Stars when it returns to our screens in January.
"It is an amazing line-up this year and they are all great fun, and ready, willing and able. The show is now in its seventh season and people realise how great it is and want to be a part of it," he shared with RSVP Live.
