We have never seen David Walliams without a smile on his face or delivering the punch line to funny joke, but today the comedian revealed his deep struggle with depression.

The Britain’s Got Talent judge revealed all in his new autobiography Camp David, where he writes about his depression and his stay in rehab.

David revealed that he has been suicidal in the past and has tried to end his life a number of times, his first attempt at the age of just 12.

The actor revealed that he was at his lowest in 2003, when he tried to end his life after splitting from an ex girlfriend.

“Just tried to hang myself. But I knew I didn’t really want to die, I just didn’t want to live. I took my weight with my feet and sat down,” he writes in a diary from 2003.

The talent show judge said that his struggle with positive mental health has ‘blighted’ his adult life.

David revealed that he was persuaded to check into The Priory rehabilitation centre on the advice of his friend and Little Britain co-star Matt Lucas weeks before the show came on air.

The funnyman said that he has a phobia of being alone, which he feels may have added to his depression.

“I can’t stand being on my own. I hate it. I have a pathological fear of [it].

“When I’m with my own thoughts I start to unravel myself and I start to think real dark thoughts, self-destructive thoughts.

“If somebody said to me you have to spend a weekend on your own, in your house, I wouldn’t be able to hack it,” he said.
