Cynthia Nixon reflects on Miranda’s character journey and what’s next for And Just Like That
Sex and the City first premiered in 1998, and the legendary show, centred around four women in their 30s, has become a staple part of pop culture.
Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Miranda Hobbes, and Charlotte York are some of the most well-known fictional characters of our time. To celebrate the return of And Just Like That, we recently caught up with the one and only Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) ahead of the third season.
We spoke with Cynthia Nixon about her character and what she hopes fans will get out of the show
Looking back at her character’s journey, Nixon reflected on everything her character has gone through over the years:
“In season one, there was a lot of drama and a sense that Miranda was unhappy in so many aspects of her life and really needed to make major changes.”
“And I, for most of us, when you wanna do that, you can’t just do that from a point of rest, you can’t just say ‘boom, everything is different now’”
“There has to be a lot of thrashing around. When we join Miranda, the thrashing has already sort of happened.”
Nixon explains that Miranda is now at a place of peace with Che and Steve, and she is starting over again, “washed clean if you will.”
In season three, Miranda is back in the dating pool, a place Nixon says she is surprised to be in again.
And the dating scene is a lot different for Miranda now:
“There are dating apps, she’s dating women, it’s like a brave new world.”
Now, Cynthia Nixon explains that the storm for Miranda has passed, that the “rain has washed everything away.”
She can now start a brand new day from “a place of calm and not so much upheaval.”
According to Nixon, season one of And Just Like That was “so much about pain and loss”, and season two was an “explosion of sex and excitement”.
For season three, Nixon thinks it is an “amazingly deft blend” of light and dark and of “joy and triumph and also those unexpected painful things” which happen to everyone in life.
Nixon also spoke on the impact of using phones in the modern dating world
“I mean, for me, I love having a phone because I love all the things I can do on a phone, but I also love being in touch with my wife all the time.”
“I think she loves being in touch with me.”
Cynthia Nixon goes on to say that although having a phone can be a distraction, it’s also a channel of communication which, in her opinion, outweighs the bad.
And Just Like That returned on May 30th. The show airs exclusively in the UK on SKY and NOW with episode one, followed by a new episode airing each week.
