The An Post Book Awards novel of the year has been revealed
2024 has been a pretty incredible year for the Irish fiction world but one book has taken home the novel of the year title at this year’s An Post Book Awards.
The Eason Novel of the Year Award was won by Donal Ryan for his novel Heart, Be at Peace.
Anyone familiar with Donal Ryan’s work won’t be surprised about his win as he’s one of our finest writers.
His addictive and beautiful work has captured the hearts of readers on the Emerald Isle and all around the world.
Heart, Be at Peace is a sequel to his 2019 novel The Spinning Heart
‘Small-town Ireland is a different place, the economy having recovered from the economic crash that served as a backdrop to the events in that book. Now the work is back, the dramas have all seemingly died down, the dark days of recession and struggle are over.
‘But a new menace is creeping around the lakeshore and the lanes of the town, old grudges are festering and new ones are rising, and the peace of the community is about to be shattered in an unimaginable way. Young people are being drawn towards the promise of fast money whilst the generation above them tries to push back the tide of an enemy none of them can touch.’
Donal Ryan is one Irish writer everyone should read because his work is just indescribably good.
Seeing it acknowledged with another An Post Book Award proves he’s one of the greats.
The An Post Irish Book Awards has been celebrating Irish writing since 2006.
Each year, the An Post Irish Book Awards recognises the very best of new and established Irish writing talent.
Sally Rooney, Graham Norton, and Martin Waddell were also honoured at the awards this week.
