Body Slugging: The soft skin trend that will keep your skin moisturised this winter

Jody Coffey

I’m not sure about you, but this cold weather has turned my skin so dry.

If you’re in the same boat, this TikTok skin trend may be for you.

It’s called ‘body slugging’ and that soft skin we long for is within reach if you can see past the name.

This is a technique that is aimed at storing moisture in the skin, so much so that it’s like that of a slug – hence the name.

During the winter months, our skin can suffer from the constant use of indoor heating, and when it loses that moisture, it begins to dry and can even crack.

This is where ‘body slugging’ comes in.

The trend has one aim: to seal the skin in such a way that trans-epidermal water loss – the loss of water from the inside of the body – is halted or decreased.

One of the best parts about this ‘Body Slugging’ trend is that all you really need to us is petroleum jelly, more commonly known as Vaseline.

Petroleum jelly, when applied to the skin, creates a sealing effect, which means that water gets trapped in the skin, which is believed to manifest itself later as a ‘glow’ on the skin because the skin can take in nutrients from body care products.

Slugging may not sound pretty, but the results across TikTok speak for themselves.

It began with users practising the trend on their faces, but given the outcomes, it made its way to our body care routines.

Who doesn’t love a cheap and cheerful beauty hack?
