Today, 8th October is World Circular Textiles Day, and we're joining forces with the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communication to highlight some of the ways you can play your part in slowing fast fashion. They've even come up with a helpful slogan – buy less, re-wear, share.
Buy Less
Be kind to the planet and your pocket by committing to buy less. Skip the lunchtime trip to the shops, steer clear of online shopping and do yourself (and the planet!) a favour by buying less.
Re-Wear
Did you know that wearing the clothes you already own for an extra nine months can reduce their carbon footprint by 25%? Get the most out of your clothes, and the energy that went into making them, by wearing what you already own, again and again. Go through your collection, unearth some gems and pop them into your regular outfit rotation.
Share
At this stage, we're all very aware of the impact overconsumption has on the environment. Textiles have the fourth highest impact on climate change, after food, housing and transport. Over 100 billion new items of clothes are made every year and less than 1% of material used to produce clothing is recycled into new clothing.
It may be easy to feel hopeless, or to turn a blind eye, but the truth is, there are steps we can all take to embrace circular fashion. For more information on how you can embrace circular fashion, check out this page right here.
Just because you're not buying new clothes doesn't mean you can't freshen up your wardrobe. Get a group chat of your friends going, and start a clothes swap. Post pictures of garments into the group and see who's up for swapping. There are also heaps of clothes swaps events taking place in Ireland. For instance, you can see upcoming clothes swaps in Dublin and Cork right here and here.
