As Ireland readies itself for Storm Agnes, we can expect some heavy rainfall and extremely windy conditions. One more element we can expect now is tornadoes. Yes, tornadoes.
While we’ve certainly got used to storms over the past few months, the possibility of tornadoes is certainly a unique one, but, according to the European Storm Forecast Experiment (Estofax) it’s possible we might see some today (Wednesday, September 27).
On Wednesday morning, Alan O’Reilly from Carlow Weather noted the warning by saying: “A level 2 issued by Estofex for parts of Ireland today with a small risk of local tornadoes from Storm Agnes. These are very difficult to forecast and can be small and very short lived but worth sharing the information.”
So, while it’s definitely a possibility, we probably won’t be seeing any recreations of the movie Twister today. And that’s definitely a good thing.
According to the Estofex website, the forecast says: “A closed upper vortex still sits across the Aegean and will only move slowly east. It is flanked by a belt of high geopotential that extends from SW Europe towards Russia.
“A strong mid-level south-westerly flow curves around the European ridge, with two intense vort-maxima rapidly traveling across southern Scandinavia and the British Isles. At lower levels, warm air spreads into the southern parts of Scandinavia ahead of a frontal wave that travels east during the day. Downstream, an intense low pressure system will affect the British Isles. Ahead of the trough across the Aegean Sea, a cold front moves into western Turkey.”

Ireland braces as Storm Agnes set to hit
This morning, Wednesday, September 27, Met Éireann has a Status Orange wind warning in place for counties Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Cork, Kerry, Tipperary and Waterford.
The warning involves “very strong and gusty southerly winds, with some severe and damaging gusts” and potential impacts include coastal flooding, difficult travel conditions, power outages and fallen trees.
Two more Status Yellow warnings are also in place, one rain warning for Carlow, Dublin, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Cork, Kerry and Waterford and another wind warning for Leinster, Munster, Galway.
