‘Tourist sandals’ are set to be big in 2019 and your mum will be delighted

Comfort and... style?

Anna O'Rourke

If your mum is always at you to wear comfortable shoes to save your feet, she’ll love the footwear trend that’s set to be huge in 2019.

Fashion insiders have noticed that socks and ugly sandals have been all over the catwalks in this season’s Fashion Week shows and are predicting that they’re about to become super popular.

Style website WhoWhatWear is calling the trend ‘tourist sandals’ and has acknowledged that it will definitely take some getting used to.

The look is almost an homage to what mums have been wearing on holidays (or in my mother’s case, around the house) for years; think flat, rubber-soled sandals with lots of straps and often a thick wooly sock for extra comfort.

To be fair, ugly shoes and socks with sandals are two trends that have been popping up for a while now – but if the latest shows are anything to go by, 2019 is the year where tourist sandals will really explode.

Brands like Chanel, Sandy Liang, Gucci and Prada have all embraced the look so expect copycats on the high street soon.

It’s something that Urban Outfitters devotees/ fans of kombucha will probably be well up for but we reckon it’ll take the rest of us a little longer to get on board with it.
