Sequins aren’t just for winter anymore, they’re having a summer moment

Ellen Fitzpatrick

Summer means sequins.

When we think of sequins, we’re often reminded of the gloomy winter months. They’re typically a style we go for to make ourselves feel more alive when the weather and temperatures outside aren’t delivering.

Normally when we add sequins to clothing, it’s for Christmas. They’re usually reserved for the festive period, but the trend is coming out of its shell with new life for summer.

Unlike the darker colours we see in the winter, fashion houses are incorporating pastels, whites and silvers to their sparkling collections to ensure nobody is confused as to what time of the year it is.

They’ve appeared on major runways this season, and celebs have been jumping on board as they incorporate sequins into their street style.

Take Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber for example, they’re taking this trend and running with it.

Hailey stepped out in New York last week in the most stunning custom Vivienne Westwood dress for Rhode Skin’s first birthday.

The mini dress had a wrap around detail on the skirt, a plunging neckline and endless amounts of rose gold sequins.

Tying in beautifully well with the Barbiecore trend, Hailey was decked out in glitter and Swarovski crystals, but the dress spoke for itself.

It isn’t only this dress that Hailey donned with summer sequins – she also stepped out in a strapless deep gre 16Arlington gown for Rhode’s launch in London in May.

The gown was figure-hugging and skimmed the floor, but was anything but basic. 16Arlington are thriving on sparkles this season and this dress is only one example.

While a Met Gala gown isn’t usually something we’d wear to our local, sequins were incorporated into Kendall’s look this year, both at the event itself and the after-party.

To take some inspiration from the supermodel with something a little bit more doable for a night out in Dublin City, let’s take a look at the Bottega Veneta dress she wore recently at a dinner with Gigi Hadid.

The pastel yellow halterneck gown was decked out in sequins, telling us that by using colours like this and bringing in sequins, we can reinvent what they mean this time of year.

Sequins are giving a sultry and sexy look to our summer wardrobe, transforming the idea that they are reserved for winter and shedding new light to them – ingraining in us that sequins can be as versatile as we want them to be.

While we’d love to have Hailey and Kendall’s bank accounts to be able to buy these exact designs, we can’t all be that lucky.

Thankfully though, sequins are making an appearance more and more on the high street, with Pretty Lavish releasing a now viral two piece set that is perfect for any summer wedding.
