With The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan, set to hit the big screen at the end of the year we reckon flapper fashion going to be huge.
Here at Her.ie HQ we couldn’t be happier and simply can’t wait to channel our inner Daisy Buchanan. Here are our top ten tips for getting to grips with flapper fashion:
1. The best way to go about getting the flapper look is to go for a sleeveless dress with a dropped waistline. Plunging necks and backs were also very popular during the 1920s and sure why not? If you’ve got it flaunt it!
2. For something a little more eye-catching go for a dress that has beads, sequins or fringes on it. And the more there are the better. Just make sure you do lots of spinning around to get the full effect.
3. If you don’t fancy going all out for the flapper look then opt for a small detail instead. We are loving headbands at the moment. Again if it has feathers, beads or flowers on it then it’s perfect. Flapper-style hairbands are another option worth checking out.
4. Alternatively you could go for a hair clip if you’re going somewhere that requires something a little dressier. Try to get your hands on a clip from the decade if possible, perhaps from a relative. If you are buying new go for something ornate. Nobody will know any different.
5. Cloche hats were huge during the days of the flapper and still look fabulous now. Besides with our lovely Irish summers you can wear them all year around. For winter combine it with a long coat and a scarf.
6. Why not invest in a string of pearls? You can find an affordable pearl necklace in most high street shops these days. And we’re sure you’ll get your money’s worth seeing as they never go out of fashion and go with pretty much anything.
7. Sometimes we wish we had lived during the 1920s what with all the glitz and glamour. Also we love the fact that back then they wore semi-comfortable high heels. Most heels were about two inches high and had a t-strap for extra support.
8. It doesn’t matter if you have long or short hair because anybody can get the flapper hairstyle. All you have to do is create a wave at the front of your hair and pull the rest of it back and clip it up at the nape of your neck. Who’d have guessed it was so simple?
9. In terms of makeup, it was all about dark eyes and dark lips which means you’re going to have to get practising with the aul lippy and eye shadow. Make sure you leave your skin natural and don’t overdo it on the blusher.
10. Remember to have fun. The flapper was all about embracing freedom and enjoying the moment. She said no to corsets, long skirts and sitting in a room quietly. We don’t need to tell you but we’re all for women who express themselves and have a good time.
Now that we’ve got the flapper fashion down to a tee all we need to do is find our own version of Jay Gatsby. Wonder if Leo is free?
