Sad news in the fashion world today as it has been reported that Anna Piaggi, the noted fashion journalist and style icon, has passed away.
Anna was famous in the fashion world not only for her quick wit and amazing eye for the latest trends, but also because she effectively launched the vintage trend when no one else even talked about it. It is safe to say that she was a woman who was firmly ahead of the curve.
She began her career working as a translator and then moved into the world of fashion journalism, where she wrote for Vogue and the avant-garde magazine Vanity. She was known for her double page spreads in the Italian edition of Vogue where she created fabulous spreads using a montage of images and texts.
An eccentric in every sense of the world, Piaggi insisted on using a bright red manual typewriter for all her writing work.
Anna was known for her eccentric dress sense.
According to a 2006 exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Anna Piaggi had a wardrobe to die for that included 2,865 dresses and 265 pairs of shoes. She never appeared in the same outfit more than once.
Her friends include famed Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld, who often sketched her and shoe designer Manolo Blahnik, who once called her “the world’s last great authority on frocks.”
Already, tributes to the late icon have started flood Twitter. Burlesque queen Dita von Teese was one of the first celebrities to express her sadness:
An absolute style icon and an inspiration for various generations of fashion addicts, there is no denying that Anna Piaggi will be greatly missed.
