Fashion Fix: Mixing High Street With High End

This will make your money go further

Cathy Donohue

Fashion can be a tricky business; although we would love to splurge the cash on all things designer realistically that isn’t an option.

However, as we have previously mentioned, the high-street often copies the catwalk and there are some serious bargains to be found.

If you really can’t resist a high-end luxury piece, then buy sensibly. Now is the time to hunt for cut price designer pieces as department stores Brown Thomas and Arnotts discount some of their stock.

Bags and shoes are wise investments which don’t date as quickly as clothes…a dress in the hot graphic print of the season may look amazing but it is likely to go out of fashion as quick as it came in.

Tailored coats and skirts in neutral or block colour shades are ideal purchases at this time of year.

Skirts can be worn with opaques now and bare legs for the summer while a coat is a good buy at any time of the year in Ireland, home of unpredictable weather.

Equally a good quality handbag or patent stilettos will last the pace, ensuring value for money.

Although it might seem extravagant at the time, the return on these items are worth it… there isn’t much competition between the Penneys shoes that scuff after one wear or the high end pair you have for years.

Invest in Orla Kiely to channel some Kate Middleton chic or Lulu Guinness is ideal for quirky accessory buys.

Luxury buying is not a regular pastime for most of us, but a well thought out purchase is a good investment. Just don’t let that sale buzz go to your head completely.
