Irish women unite in a powerful new short calling for the 8th amendment to be repealed

The women of Ireland have spoken and their collective voice is calling for the 8th amendment to be repealed.

A new incredibly powerful video launched today, demanding the government take action.

The piece, entitled We Face This Land was directed by Dave Tynan. Dave is best known for his viral sensation Just Saying and has previously won an IFTA for short film Rockmount.

“I felt the key to it was a lot of women speaking the lines, that it was the collective that was the key. Women have suffered alone in this country; they speak in unison in the film,” said Dave.

We Face This Land features a poem written by novelist Sarah Maria Griffin (Not Lost, Spare and Found Parts) which is read aloud by over 30 different women, including:

Tara Flynn, Aoibhinn McGinnity, Seána Kerslake, Róisín Ingle, Ailbhe Smyth, Una Mullaly, Senator Lynn Ruane and her daughter Jordanne Jones, Charlene McKenna, Eleanor Methven, Louise Bruton, Sinead Gleeson, MayKay from Fight Like Apes and Niamh Algar.

Every element of the film was made possible by volunteers. The time and energy of the almost 100 people in front of the camera, the 20 behind the camera, the post-production team, the music track (by Irish electronic musician Mmoths) and right down to coffee on the day were all donated.

Anna Cosgrave, founder of Repeal Project was blown away by the concept and activism of the film.

“When an all-male team approached me, showing such passion for the Pro-Choice movement and willing to volunteer resources I was absolutely blown away. Their vision twinned with Sarah Maria Griffin’s poem really articulates so well why change needs to happen and my voice couldn’t travel as far as this piece will,” she said.

The film was produced by Dave Leahy and Liam Ryan for Warrior Films and Michael Donnelly V for MDV. It was shot stunningly by cinematographer JJ Rolfe. All the post production was carried out in Screen Scene with Juniper Calder editing.
