The woman who died after the Cork City Marathon has been described as an ‘inspiration to everyone’.
Ellen Cassidy (24) died after falling ill at the marathon’s finish line.
The Old Mallow lady was one of over 11,000 people to take part in the full and half marathon events and the 10k race on Sunday.
She became unwell after crossing the finish line on St Patrick’s Street after lunchtime yesterday, June 1.
The 24-year-old was treated by medics before being rushed to Cork University Hospital by ambulance but was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after.
She was a widely talented woman who was a part of numerous clubs and groups, including the Dolphin Swimming Club, University of Cork Swimming Club, and the Munster Regional Squad.
Ellen represented Ireland at the European Youth Olympics in 2015 and was on the Mardyke Arena UCC Emerging Talent Programme in 2018, debuting at the European Junior Championships in the 200m backstroke in Helsinki the same year.
Furthermore, she was Joint Chairperson of the UCC Swimming Club and the organisation of the Inter Varsities Swimming Championship in Cork in 2024.
The Dolphin Swim Club paid tribute, saying: “Her spirit, dedication, and friendship touched us all.”
“Ellen swam through life with grace, strength, and passion. Your smile and your drive will never be forgotten.
“Our deepest condolences to all the Cassidy’s family and friends,” they added.
Swim Munster also took to social media to remember Ellen, saying they were deeply ‘shocked and saddened’ by the news.
“She was an inspiration to everyone she met and dedicated to her sport of swimming and the promotion of it.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with her mother Violet, father Tom, sister Mary and brother Charlie, her family, friends, and all who knew her during this difficult time.”
In a statement, Cork City Marathon confirmed the tragic news.
“The person was attended to immediately by the emergency services on the scene. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased.”
