An Irish woman has urged Americans to stop using a “cutesy” and “exotic” Irish name after pointing out that its meaning translates to something quite unfortunate.
There are many factors to weigh as a parent when choosing your child’s name, including how it sounds with your surname, the nicknames that might stem from it, and, of course, the meaning behind it.
Irish names are growing in popularity, and rightly so, as many are truly unique and carry beautiful meanings. However, one TikToker has taken to the app to warn Americans against choosing one particular Irish name.
Kelly shared a TikTok video last month warning Americans who are opting to name their newborn daughters Kennedy.
"Americans, Americans, Americans, I’m begging you as an Irish girl, please, I’m begging you. Please stop naming your daughter's first name Kennedy, okay?" she pleaded.
"I wouldn’t call your son's first name Kennedy, either, to be honest, but particularly stop naming your daughters' first name Kennedy."
She went on to explain that although the name may sound “cutesy” and “out there,” it actually has a rather unfortunate translation.
"I know you think it’s a cutesy name, it’s got a K, it’s got a Y. Oooh, it sounds a little cutesy, out there, exotic, or a little 90s.
"Do you know what Kennedy means?’ Kelly questioned the people of TikTok, ‘Do you know what Kennedy means?! It means ugly head. It means helmet head.
"I know you have not researched this, you didn’t put a modicum of research or thought into what you thought it might mean.
"I’m begging you stop. Stop calling your children ugly head," Kelly concluded.
This follows shortly after the release of the most popular baby names, where Jack and Sophie were knocked from their top positions, per Extra.ie.
New data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show that Rían was the most popular name for baby boys last year, while Lily topped the list for girls.
Jack trailed closely behind Rían, followed by Noah, James, and Oisín, while Éabha, Fiadh, Grace, and Sadie completed the top five girls’ names.
