Gardai have launched a fresh appeal for information around the murder of 17-year-old Raonaid Murray in 1999
It’s coming up on the 25th anniversary of her death and officers say they are no closer to finding her killer.
Over the years, they’ve taken more than 4,500 witness statements but are hoping now that time has passed, someone may now be in a position to come forward with information.
What happened to Raonaid Murray?
On September 4th, 1999, Raonaid’s body was found close to her home at Silchester Crescent in Glenageary, in the early hours of the morning.
She was last seen alive on September 3rd, 1999 at around 11:20pm having left a local pub to head towards home.
According to Gardai, she had been working a shift at a clothes shop, known as Sally West, in the Dun Laoghaire town centre earlier that evening.
After leaving there, at around 9:00 pm, she went to Scott’s Public House with a friend.
They decided to head to a nightclub later that night, and so, Raonaid left the pub at around 11:20 pm to head home to change.
Sadly, she never made it home and her body was found shortly later, at around 12:33 am, less than 500 yards from her home.
Fresh appeal
This week, gardai launched a new appeal for information and are asking anything with an account to come forward.
Investigators are hoping that someone may be in a position all these years later to provide information on the case that they could not at the time.
Gardai also say if anyone has information that could help with identifying a motive for the murder of Raonaid, or if anyone has doubts about the truth of an alibi which has been provided, “please come forward”.
Speaking about the case, Detective Superintendent Brain O’Keefe said: “An Garda Siochana and Raonaid’s family would urge anyone with any information to please come forward.
“By not coming forward with that information you may be unknowingly shielding a killer.”
Gardai said solving the murder is of the utmost priority and that any accounts given will be treated confidentially with compassion and sensitivity.
