Garda Kevin Flatley was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident
Tributes have been pouring in following the untimely passing of Garda Kevin Flatley.
The dad-of-two was tragically killed after he was struck by a motorcycle on the R132 at Lissenhall near Swords. The 49-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
The motorcyclist was taken to Beaumont Hospital, where he is being treated for serious injuries.
The incident, which happened on May 11th, has left the Garda community heartbroken.
Tributes have been flowing in since Garda Flatley’s tragic passing, with Garda Commissioner Drew Harris leading the tributes.
He shared: “I am deeply saddened by the death of my colleague Garda Kevin Flatley. My thoughts, and the thoughts of all personnel in An Garda Síochána, are with Kevin’s family and friends.
“We also think of Kevin’s colleagues at the Roads Policing Unit, Dublin Castle. Kevin, 49 years of age, has over 26 years of dedicated service to An Garda Síochána and the people of Ireland.”
Micheál Martin also issued a statement following news of Garda Flatley’s passing.
He said he was shocked to hear the harrowing news.
“The loss of a garda while on duty will be keenly felt by those who knew him, in communities across Ireland and by all members of An Garda Síochána. Our thoughts and prayers go to all those in mourning following this terrible tragedy.”
President Michael D Higgins added: “The loss of a garda has a deep impact on society due to this strong connection and my thoughts are with his family and all those who knew and cared for Gda Flatley across his life.”
Gardaí are urging witnesses to come forward following the tragic incident.
Road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam recordings, and were in the area at the time are urged to share this material with Gardaí.
Investigators are particularly interested in tracking the movements of a Yamaha R1 motorcycle in the vicinity between 12 noon and the time of the collision.
