Tributes paid as woman killed in Limerick dog attack named locally

“I’m so heartbroken.”

Nicole Morey was tragically killed following the attack which happened inside a residential property in Ballyneety shortly before midnight.

The woman sustained serious injuries from the attack and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The dog involved in the attack was destroyed and three other dogs were seized by authorities.

It is believed that Ms Morey died on her birthday.

In a post on Facebook, Ms Morey’s sister Jolene wrote, “I’m so heartbroken. On the day of your birthday. I love you Nicole Morey.”

She continued: “My heart is shattered once again. On your birthday I only hung up on you two seconds before I really tried my best to help.

“I’m so sorry. Nicole I love you so much. It feels like a bit bad dream.”

In an updated statement on Wednesday afternoon, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said, via JOE: “At approximately 11.40pm last night, Tuesday 4th June 2024, Gardaí received report and attended an incident where a woman (23) was fatally injured following a dog attack at a domestic residence in Ballyneety, Co. Limerick.

“Gardaí from the Regional Armed Support Unit attended and during the course of making the scene safe, encountered a number of aggressive dogs on the property.

“Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact Roxboro Road Garda Station on (061) 214 340, the Garda Confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.”

Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys said she is “absolutely appalled by the news” of the incident, saying, “I want to begin by expressing my deepest sympathies to her family in what is a deeply shocking incident.

Minister Humphries continued: “I have consistently said that more action is required in relation to dog control.

“That’s why I have set up a cross Governmental stakeholder group, chaired by the retired Deputy Garda Commissioner John Twomey, to examine this whole area. That Group’s work is underway.

“I have asked the Group to examine the restricted breeds list, in line with actions being taken in the UK and Northern Ireland.

“I am committed to working with colleagues across Government in taking whatever action is necessary to strengthen our dog control laws.”
