Topshop staff “disgusted” as job losses learnt about through social media

The announcement was made yesterday.

Topshop staff have expressed their anger after many were made aware of their job losses through social media.

It was announced yesterday (Monday) that all Topshop and Topman stores would close permanently following a buyout from online retail giant, ASOS.

The company has purchased all Arcadia group brands including Topshop, Topman, and Miss Selfridge after the group fell into administration last November due to falling sales amidst the coronavirus pandemic. Arcardia’s stores will not be reopening.

Some Topshop staff have since expressed frustration and anger after finding out about the job losses through ASOS’s social media account. ASOS announced the buy yesterday morning, tweeting that Topshop and Topman had joined “the ASOS family”.

However, PA News reports that administrator Deloitte only informed the group’s 2,500 remaining staff of the news at 9am. It is expected that some 300 Topshop staff will be saved in the move.

Many employees have since taken to social media to criticise ASOS and Deloitte’s seemingly premature announcement, citing the treatment of staff as “not good enough.”

Another worker called the move “disgusting” and said that their manager found out about the job losses while watching Sky News yesterday morning.

ASOS chief executive Nick Beighton confirmed the news yesterday, saying: “The acquisition of these iconic British brands is a hugely exciting moment for ASOS and our customers and will help accelerate our multi-brand platform strategy.

“We have been central to driving their recent growth online and, under our ownership, we will develop them further, using our design, marketing, technology and logistics expertise, and working closely with key strategic retail partners in the UK and around the world.”

Elsewhere, rival online fashion retailer Boohoo recently bought the Debenhams website for £55 million after the company was forced to shut its doors last year. Its stores will also not be reopening.
