A three-year-old in Albuquerque, New Mexico, shot both his parents after finding a handgun in his mother’s handbag.

The toddler was looking for his mother’s iPod when he accidentally picked up the weapon, according to reports.

It is believed that the child fired one shot which hit his father’s right buttock.

The same bullet then hit his mother, who is reportedly eight months pregnant, in the shoulder.

Both adults survived the shooting but doctors have kept the child’s mother in hospital to monitor her as she is heavily pregnant.

The little boy and his two-year-old sister are currently in the care of local authorities.

Police have not yet released the names of the child’s parents and reports say they will face charges of criminal neglect of their children.
