The tobacco industry has been specifically targeting women and girls in an effort to increase sales and coax them into smoking, it was claimed in a conference today.

According to the Irish Independent, tobacco companies are branding products in a way that promotes glamour and slimness to recruit more female smokers.

By packaging cigarettes in colourful boxes and marketing them with attractive names, tobacco companies are enticing more female smokers.

The conference was organised by the Irish Cancer Society and the National Women’s Council to discuss the issue of female smoking.

Kathleen O’Meara of the Irish Cancer Society said that Irish women should be wary of tobacco products branded towards females.

“Women need to be aware of the tobacco industry’s tactics and they also need support to quit. Around 70pc of smokers want to quit but they have to helped. There is a need for more support in disadvantaged areas,” she said.

Twenty nine per cent of Irish women smoke but the percentage of female smokers in disadvantaged areas is more than ten per cent higher.
