Thousands of protesters have broken into US government building Capitol Hill

Trump's supporters have breached the barricades, climbed walls and stormed Capitol Hill. Reports suggest one woman has been shot.

The US Capitol was put on lockdown on Wednesday as crowds protesting President-elect Joe Biden's victory breached security barricades. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has urged his followers to "stay peaceful" as thousands of his supporters have stormed Capitol Hill in protest. A CNN employee tried to leave the building and couldn’t because police said the building is on lockdown.

He tweeted: "Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution, giving States a chance to certify a corrected set of facts, not the fraudulent or inaccurate ones which they were asked to previously certify. USA demands the truth!" Pence was escorted out of the building as the crowds filtered into the Capitol Building. The attack comes amidst a key battle in the race for control of the US Senate.
