Parents welcoming a new baby from December 1st, 2024, will be eligible for a new financial support scheme.
It is designed to ease the financial burden during the early days of parenthood.
As part of the recent Budget announcement, the Newborn Baby Grant will offer new parents an additional €420 in the first month of their child’s life.
The grant is composed of two parts: a €280 one-time Newborn Baby Grant, which will be paid alongside the first month of Child Benefit, amounting to €140.
This combined payment aims to provide much-needed support to parents as they adjust to the financial challenges of having a newborn.
The grant will be available to all parents of children under the age of 16, provided they meet certain criteria and are residents in the State.
In certain circumstances, children aged 17 and 18 may also qualify for the payment if they are:
Enrolled in full-time education or training,
Unable to support themselves due to a disability.
This includes full-time education at primary, secondary, and third-level institutions, although there are some exceptions regarding third-level institutions.
Child Benefit, which is a universal payment and not means-tested, is typically paid to the mother or stepmother of a child, although the recipient can be changed if the child resides with a different caregiver, such as a father or other guardian.
Payments are made monthly, on the first Tuesday of each month, starting in the month following the birth of the child.
For parents of babies born after December 1, the first payment, totaling €420, will be issued in January 2025.
For more details on the Newborn Baby Grant and Child Benefit, including eligibility and how to apply, further information is available on official government websites.
