There’s a chance the Northern Lights may be seen above Ireland this weekend

This would be incredible.

People in Ireland may have a chance to see the Northern Lights this weekend. The Northern Lights, as described by the Northern Lights Centre, are "actually collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth's atmosphere. The lights are seen above the magnetic poles of the northern and southern hemispheres." Also known as the aurora borealis, the natural phenomenon is normally visible over Iceland or north of Norway. However, Astronomy Ireland's David Moore as said there is a "good change" they could be visible over Ireland this weekend. He told the Irish Independent:

"There is definitely a good chance, we never know with these things. We're hoping it would be visible. "Certainly over Donegal as the horizon looks over the ocean where are there no facing lights, but it's been seen all over the country before, even as far down as Cork."

He did caution that a dark and clear sky would be needed to be able to see the lights clearly, "advising everyone to be watching the northern horizon" just in case. Met Éireann have forecast partially clear skies for Saturday night, so you may be in with a chance to see the Northern Lights. A forecaster said:

"It will be largely dry this evening and tonight with partly clear skies. It will turn cold after dark with lowest temperatures of -2 to +2 degrees and frost in some areas."
