Are the Williams sisters completely unstoppable? After their performance on Saturday at Wimbledon, we’re inclined to think that yes, yes they are.
Both Serena and Venus hold five Wimbledon singles titles each and now, after their amazing display on Saturday night, the pair also hold five doubles trophies together.
Serena, the youngest of the two, became the first woman in her thirties to lift the Venus Rosewater dish since Martina Navratilova won the title in 1990 at the age of 33.
“I’m like a fine wine. I get better with age,” Serena said after her victory.
However she has her eyes fixed firmly on the future.
“I’m always on to the next one. It’s always about trying for another one. I want to keep doing more, I want to keep playing well,” she added.
Serena was emotional after her victory because it was her first major win since undergoing two rounds of surgery on her foot and being diagnosed with a blood clot on her lungs. Serena admits that her illness was so serious, she almost “didn’t make it.”
“It means a lot to the family. It has been two years since I ran into all that trouble and now I’m coming back,” said Serena.
And it isn’t just Serena who has been in the wars. In 2011, Venus admitted that she had been diagnosed with Sjogren’s syndrome, an autoimmune disorder that causes fatigue and joint pain.
Needless to say the latest wins for the Williams sisters are well-deserved, and we can’t wait to see them on the courts again. Inspirational women or what?
