An Islamic court in Sudan has confirmed that a pregnant woman who is sentenced to be hanged for apostasy will be permitted to give birth before her execution.

The woman in question was found guilty of apostasy after she married a Christian man.

According to the Telegraph, Meriam Yehya Ibrahim was raised by a Christian mother but born to a Muslim father.

Ibrahim is eight months pregnant and currently in prison with a toddler who is 20 months old.

She was convicted on Sunday and given three days to recant her faith. “We gave you three days to recant but you insist on not returning to Islam. I sentence you to be hanged,” Judge Abbas Mohammed Al-Khalifa told Mrs Ibrahim.

Ibrahim is also due to be flogged for adultery as her marriage is considered void under Islamic law because her father was a Muslim. She is due to receive 100 lashes.

According to CNN, her husband uses a wheelchair and depends on his wife for “all details of his life.”

However, an official has confirmed that the verdict is not final. Ms. Ibrahim’s lawyer is due to file an appeal within days.
