Here's how powerful an Irish passport is compared to ones from other countries

Almost a million, to be precise.

A record number of Irish passports were issued this year, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

2019 saw more than 900,000 passports issued due to new applications and renewals.

This is an increase of 7 percent on 2018.

RTE News reports that in some cases, more than 5,800 applications were filed in a single day during peak periods throughout the year.

January, March, April, and May all saw applications exceed 100,000 per month.

As expected, many applications came from the UK, with over 94,000 first time applications coming from people born in England and Northern Ireland.

Just over half of applications for Irish passports this year were submitted online.
