British actor Peter Vaughan has passed away at the age of 93.

An accomplished performer of both stage and screen, he is perhaps most well known to younger viewers as Maester Aemon in Game of Thrones. He appeared in seasons 1, 3, 4 and 5 of the HBO franchise.

But older viewers will recall his memorable role as Harry Grout, or ‘Grouty’, in classic BBC sitcom, Porridge. Starring alongside Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale, Vaughan played the inmate with menacing aplomb.

His agent Sally Long-Innes said: “This is to confirm that very sadly Peter Vaughan passed away at approximately 10.30 this morning. He died peacefully with his family around him.”
