“I hope you get better”
Paul Mescal gave the sweetest tribute to his mum at last nights Olivier Awards at the Royal Albert Hall.
It’s the biggest night in British theatre that saw the Normal People actor take home best actor for his role as Stanley Kowalski in the new stage adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire.
The production also picked up the award for best revival and Anjana Vasan won best actress in a supporting role as Stella in the play directed by Olivier winner Rebecca Frecknall.
During Mescal’s acceptance speech he thanked his mum Dearbhla Mescal, who is receiving treatment for cancer.
He said he hopes the award will give her a “little bit of a lift” as she battles the disease.
Towards the end of his speech he said: “I hope you get better.”
Dearbhla was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma last July, which is an incurable type of bone marrow cancer that often affects the spine, skull, pelvis, and ribs.
She is sharing her journey on social media to encourage other going through similar health problems to remain positive.
In her latest Instagram story updating her followers, Dearbhla said she’s tired all of the time but she’s feeling good.
She said: “I’m struggling to watch TV because I feel like I’ve motion sickness. Using the phone is the same.
“I’m dosing and relaxing and tomorrow I get my transplant so that’ll be the next stage.”
She also shared a snap of 27-year-old son Paul’s best actor nominee for last night’s awards.

The ceremony hosted by Ted Lasso star, Hannah Waddingham and recognised numerous amount of plays, musicals and operas.
