New tax to increase cost of vapes and refills from tomorrow

E-Liquid Products Tax comes into effect tomorrow

The tax will see increases in the price of vapes and refills in hopes to decrease their use among young people.

From tomorrow, the E-Liquid Products Tax will add a charge of 50c per millilitre on e-liquid for disposable and reusable vapes.

The average cost of a 2ml disposable vape will go from €8 to €9.23 in an effort to limit their environmental impact due to their single-use batteries.

In addition, a 10ml bottle of liquid for reusable vapes will go from €6 to €12. Vat of 23pc will also be added to the price increase.

The new tax was announced back in September by Government as part of Budget 2026 measures.

While Ireland is doing their part in making vapes more unaffordable, the UK banned disposable vapes back in June, per The Irish Independent.

Belgium and France have since also banned disposable vapes, with other countries set to follow suit.

The Department of Finance predicts that the tax on e-liquid could capitulate €17m in revenue over 12 months.

The Central Office figures suggests that the 18 to 34 age bracket will account for the majority of that €17m, taking into consideration that one-quarter of them vape daily.

Many seem to believe that vaping is a healthier alternative to cigarettes, however the HSE does not recommend this as a method of giving up smoking long-term.

Instead, it recommends seeking advice from your GP or to use alternative licensed medicines to stop smoking.

Speaking on the new tax, minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill said: "Protecting children and young people from these products is a priority for this government and this measure will strengthen the work already underway in my department," per The Irish Independent.
